Day 5: Walk with the Wise

Devotional

You are the company you keep.

Though you may be wise, foolish friends will eventually destroy you. Though you may be foolish, wise friends will show and teach you success. This is an easy way to prosper.

What a simple rule for wisdom and life! Get rid of foolish friends, and choose the wise for friends. You will grow in wisdom and avoid much trouble in life. Good athletes use superior competition to bring out their best, even if it means frequent training losses.

How can you get rid of foolish friends? Be unavailable. Or hang around wise people, and foolish friends will flake off, because they do not like wise people.

How can you find wise friends? Look in church for people that you respect...wise people often have wise friends. Join a community group. Become part of a serving team at your campus. Invite someone out for coffee. Walk with the wise and become wise!

Proverbs 13:20

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

Proverbs 22:11

One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend.

Proverbs 14:7

Stay away from a fool, for you will not find knowledge on their lips.

Proverbs 27:6, 9, 17

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.

Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Proverbs 28:23

Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.

Application

  • Do any of these verses describe friends in your life that you need to walk away from?

  • How can you start to ‘get rid’ of those relationships that may be leading you away from God? Consider seeking out a wise friend or mentor.
