God made us to be in relationship with others, but relational fulfillment is not the end goal of life. So many people believe if they could just meet Mr. or Mrs. Right all their problems would disappear and they would live happily ever after. We are often tempted with the myth that when we meet the right person, everything will be alright. This thinking creates trouble in our relationships and misplaces our focus away from our true purpose. In Genesis 2, Adam and Eve met the right person, yet still sinned incredibly. Their finding Mr. or Mrs. Right didn't solve all their problems. After reading Genesis 2, reflect on these questions:
- Do you agree that the "Right Person Myth" is really a myth?
- How have you seen this way of thinking affect your relationships or those of your friends?
- Before God declares it is not good to be alone (v.18), He first commands Adam to obey Him (v.17). What is important about this order?
- Though the right person can and should lead us towards God, we need to individually pursue our relationship with our Creator as first priority. How can you do this today?
